Diving For
Sponges
Year: September 2024 - ongoing
Project Statement: I started exploring the Sponge Docks in Tarpon Springs, FL. I was fascinated by the sights and culture of this historic Greek community and town. Sadly the industry of sponge diving is dying due to the influx of hurricanes and red tide that damages our area regularly. In addition, the work of diving for sponges is a dangerous and low paying career leading many to not want to pass it down to their children. As the amount of boats keep shrinking and the challenges keep increasing, this tourist town may eventually fade away into history. I wanted to tell the story of this town before it was too late. So I started this project called “Diving For Sponges.”
